General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf, United States Army general (Ret.) who, while he served as Commander of U.S. Central Command, was commander of coalition forces in the Persian Gulf War, has died at the age of 78.
His cheerful and sunny disposition gave Americans confidence in his abilities to manage the war. His ability to communicate the effort and tactics to a nation via his presentations at his press conferences were legendary, and became prime-time viewing. His service to the nation cannot be understated, and he will be sorely missed.
