Former neurosurgeon Ben Carson announced in his hometown of Detroit on May 4, 2015 that he was running for President. His speech Monday at Detroit’s Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts addressed his motivation for a run:
“We need to reestablish faith in our communities and the values and principles that got us through slavery, that got us through Jim Crow, and segregation, and all kinds of horrible things that were heaped upon us… Why were we able to get through those? Because of our faith, because of our family, because of our values, and as we allow the hip-hop community to destroy those things for us, and as we grasp onto what’s politically correct and not what is correct, we continue to deteriorate.”
In announcing his intention to seek the presidency, Carson joins an already diverse GOP presidential field, including Republican Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rand Paul (R-KY), former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, and former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR).
