Lisa Falkenberg, Fred Goodall, and I joined Craig Cohen to discuss several very interesting topics this week on Houston Public Media‘s show Houston Matters, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: First, the Houston Association of Realtors announced area home sales fell 8.8 percent last month; the largest decline in several months. This is a sign of a slumping economy, but many home buyers can rejoice that they can almost, just barely, still NOT afford to buy real estate here. Single family homes last month sold at a median price of $230,000, while the average rent for a single-family home is just under $1900 a month.
Next, Houston Heights residents will have an opportunity to lift a longtime ban on beer and wine sales in November. The Houston City Council Wednesday formally approved the ballot proposition presented after a petition from the Houston Heights Beverage Coalition was validated. If voters lift the ban, it will mean grocery and convenience stores in the dry area of the Heights will be able to sell beer and wine for the first time in more than a century.
